Hi guys, it's Asiya. And today I've prepared a video about English grammar.
Yes, it is important. It raised 25 percent of your IELTS writing and speaking scores. And I've selected five of the most common grammatical mistakes students make, and I will tell you what they are and how to avoid them.
Okay? Let's get started. Mistake number five, past simple or present perfect.
Have a look at these two examples and tell me what tense would you use in each of them. Here is the first one.
Over the last 20 years, the number of students studying at university, hm-hmm, use about to increase. The second example is "20 years ago, fewer high school graduates", hm-hmm, use about to go, "to study at university".
So which tense would you use in each sentence? The answer is the first one is a present perfect.
Over the last 20 years, the number of students has increased. And the second one is the past simple.
20 years ago, fewer high school graduates went on to study at university. Here is a simple rule for you.
Use the present perfect to talk about the time that started in the past but continues until the present, maybe something happened to the past but the result is in the present. For example, I have lived in London for over eight years.
So I am still in London, the result is in the present. Use the past simple to talk about the action that finished in the past.
