The silica-phellem block and stomate tubercle on 3rd leaf are underdeveloped, the tubercle of stomate block is small and dense in japonica, big and sparse in O.
The tongue is covered with a series of cone-shaped small projections called papillae in which there are taste buds that can sense flavors, such as sweet, bitter, salty, and sour.
And then we look in a little more detail, you can see the individual papillae come up, and there are little ridges on there, so it's a papilla on papilla and so forth.
Papillae were only a little longer in lions than in cats, noted Noel and David Hu, an associate professor at Georgia Tech. Their findings were published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Zooming in revealed that the papillae have a U-shaped cavity at their tips, which has a wicking effect and helps carry droplets of saliva through that top layer of fur down to the cat's skin.
